What is Acrodermatitis Chronica Atrophicans?

Acrodermatitis Chronica Atrophicans is a progressive dermatitis and third stage of European Lyme borreliosis due to the effect of continuing active infection with Borrelia afzelii which is characterized by involvement of mainly the extensor surface of the extremities. It is composed of hardened erythematous plaques. Mostly appears on the elbow, knees, hands and feet which become atrophic and it gives appearance like tissue- paper to the affected area. This makes skin atrophy with wrinkles.

Causes:

Absence of correct treatment of early Lyme borreliosiscan develop acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans.

Treatment of Acrodermatitis Chronica Atrophicans

  • Acrodermatitis Chronica Atrophicans is recommended if the level of specific antibodies is low.It should take for 3 weeks.
  • Ceftriaxone or cefotaxime or aqueous penicillin G is introduced if antibody titer is high.
  • Drugs like amoxicillin, doxycycline, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime are shown effective in some patients.
