What is Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Helicis?

Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Helicis (CNH) is a rare ear disorder caused due to pressure on ear resulting into small, painful, scaly nodule of the helix or antihelix of the ear. CNH is more commonly seen in men older than 50 years with the male-to-female ratio 10:1. It was first discovered by Winkler in 1915.

Other names of CNH are chondrodermatitis nodularis chronica helicis (Winkler), painful ear nodule, painful auricular nodule.

Causes of Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Helicis

  • Pressure on the skin of the ear
  • Sleeping frequently on one side
  • Reduction in the local blood supply of the ear
  • Increased sun-exposure
  • Actinic damage
  • Injury to the skin due to tight headgear or a telephone headset
  • Exposure to cold

What are the symptoms of Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Helicis?

  • Painful, pale or slightly reddish nodules or ulcers on the affected area
  • Damage to the cartilage and overlying skin

Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Helicis Treatment

  • Antibiotic creams to prevent infection
  • Corticosteroid creams or injections to reduce inflammation
  • Freezing the affected area with liquid nitrogen for fast recovery
  • Collagen injections
  • Cryotherapy
  • Avoid sleeping on one side
  • Use of pressure-relieving pillows or pads
  • Reduction of exposure to cold and sun
  • Surgical method such as excision biopsy to remove inflamed cartilage under the skin to prevent recurrence
