What is Churg Strauss Allergic Granulomatosis?

Churg Strauss Allergic Granulomatosis is a multi-organ disorder causing inflammation in blood vessels (vasculitis) in the lungs, skin, nerves, and abdomen. These blood vessels are small arteries and veins. This disorder restricts the blood flow to the affecting organs, bringing temporary or permanent damage. Churg Strauss allergic granulomatosis is more commonly seen in men than women at the age of 4-75 with a mean of about 50 years. It was first discovered by Churg and Strauss, in 1951.

Churg Strauss Allergic Granulomatosis is also known as allergic granulomatosis, Churg-Strauss disease, allergic angiitis and granulomatosis, allergic granulomatosis and angiitis, eosinophilic granulomatous vasculitis, Churg-Strauss vasculitis.

Causes of Churg Strauss Allergic Granulomatosis

  • Abnormal function of immune system due to asthma, and allergy
  • Over use of penicillin, penicillamine, iodides, and leukotriene modifiers

What are the symptoms of Churg Strauss Allergic Granulomatosis?

  • Fever

Churg Strauss Allergic Granulomatosis Treatment

  • Corticosteroids such as prednisone or prednisolone are primarily used to reduce the inflammation.
  • Immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclophosphamide (cytoxan), azathioprine (imuran), methotrexate (rheumatrex), for active immune system, may be given to the people who do not respond to corticosteroids.
  • In severe cases, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocking agents, such as infliximab and etanercept, may be prescribed for a limited period.
