What is Dermatophytosis?

Dermatophytosis is also known as dermatophytes, ringworm or tinea. They have a unique enzymatic capacity. It is the fungal infection of the skin, hair or nails. Dermatophytosis is the fungal infection of the skin. It is seen in many animals including man and rodents.It is appear on hand and arm. Feathers, animal hooves, hair, and animal skin all can be used as substrates for the keratinophilic fungi. It is characterized by smooth ascospores. The incubation period is 10-14 days.

Causes of Dermatophytosis

• The presence of the fungus and its metabolic products usually induces an allergic and inflammatory eczematous response in the host
• Shedding of skin scales
• Fungi.
• The combination of warm weather and tight clothing, which encourages fungus growth.

What are the symptoms of Dermatophytosis?

• Eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis.
• Elevated patch of hair overlying scabbed area without patchy hair loss
• Red papules
• Less erythema and fewer lesions
• Ring-like raised itchy patches
• Irritation, pruritus, and edema at the site of entry
• Scabs

DermatophytosisTreatment

• Anti fungal treatments are used to cure the disease.
• Terbinafine 250 mg/day6 weeks for finger nails,12 weeks for toe nails.
• Take Griseofulvin 500mg/day to cure for 4-6 weeks.
• Antifugal medications may include griseofulvin, itraconazole, terbinafine and fluconazole.
• Tinea versicolor may be treated with selenium sulfide lotion or ketoconazole shampoo.
• Steroid therapy is used but the condition of the animal’s skin is in nutritional status, cage cleanliness, and the environmental temperatures and humidity.
• Gently remove and wash area with chlorhexiderm at a concentration of not more than 1%, before applying medicated cream or lotion daily.
