What is Ecthyma Gangrenosum?

Ecthyma gangrenosum is also known as deep impetigo. Ecthyma gangrenosum is a bacterial skin infection. Ecthyma gangrenosum is a rare. Bacteremic EG in males (male-to-female ratio is 1.3-5:1). Nonbacteremic EG in females (female-to-male ratio is 2.3:1). Ecthyma Gangrenosum is appear in any age group. This disease show crust of a pyogenic infection involves the entire epidermis. This disease occur in the lower extremities of children and people who have diabetes. Lesion is associated with neutropenia. Multiple lesions may occur.

Causes of Ecthyma Gangrenosum

  • Compromised immune systems
  • Gram-positive bacteria-Staphylococcus aureus
  • Fungi-Curvularia species
  • Viral - Herpes simplex virus
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Upper respiratory tract infection

What are the symptoms of Ecthyma Gangrenosum?

  • Suppurative otitis media
  • Blue nails
  • Skin ulceration
  • Skin rash and a painful
  • A crusted ulcer that follows the appearance of the blister
  • Small blister with a red border ulcers are commonly found on the ankles and dorsum of the feet.

Ecthyma Gangrenosum Treatment

  • Placing a warm wet cloth over the area can help remove ulcer crusts.
  • Treatment depends on the progression of the disease.
  • Povidone iodine and hydrogen peroxide may be used as antiseptics.
  • Penicillin should be adequate to treat Streptococci.
  • Warm soaks (using a cloth soaked in warm tap water) are useful for removing crusts.
