Erysipelas- Symptoms, Causes, Treatment and Home Remedies



What is Erysipelas?

Erysipelas is a streptococcus bacterial infection of the dermis. Erysipelas is a skin disease with the bacterial skin infection. Erysipelas is form of cellulitis. It is also occur in animals. An infection in animals caused by the bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. Infection by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in humans is known as erysipeloid. It is curable disease. Erysipelas is occur in children and adults. Erysipelas is appear on face, ears and lower legs. Disease is relatively uncommon in pigs under 8-12 weeks of age.

Causes of Erysipelas

  • Erysipelas is caused by streptococci.
  • Erysipelas is caused by infection include a cut in the skin, skin ulcers.
  • Erysipelas is caused by Group A streptococcal bacterial infection.
  • Water systems that have become contaminated with the organism.
  • Sudden changes in temperature and warm summer weather.

What are the symptoms of Erysipelas?

  • Redness and swelling of the affected areas.
  • Patients have high fevers, shaking, chills, fatigue, headaches, vomiting and illness within 48 hours of the initial infection.
  • Skin lesion enlarges rapid ally with painful and hardened rash.
  • Facial erysipelas lesions on the cheeks and the bridge of the nose
  • Patient have purple patches on the skin.

Erysipelas Treatment

  • Antibiotics using penicillin's, clindamycin or erythromycin.
  • For children less than 3 years old prompt treatment with IV cephalosporins.
  • Benzylpenicillin injection.
  • Treat by intra muscular injection 1ml per 10kg.
  • Flucloxacillin as tablets, syrup, intra muscular injections or intravenous infusions.
  • Vaccinate all gilts and young boars twice, two to four weeks apart from 14 weeks of age.
  • Children with st rep throat are usually treated with amoxicillin.
