What is Erythema Multiforme?

Erythema Multiforme is an allergic reaction caused by skin disorder. The disorder occurs mainly in children and young adults. It appear on the legs, arms, palms, hands, feet. The exact cause is unknown but it is curable disease. Erythema Multiforme is more appear in males than females. The male to female ratio is 3:2 to 2:1. This disease appear in any age group. Erythema Multiforme is a self-limiting, inflammatory skin eruption.

Causes of Erythema Multiforme

  • Erythema Multiforme is caused by infections include herpes simplex and mycoplasma infections.
  • Erythema Multiforme is caused by medication and illness.
  • Drugs anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Erythema Multiforme is caused by viral- Herpes simplex I & II
  • Erythema Multiforme is caused by immunologic disorders
  • Mycoplasma pneumonia, cold sores, herpes of the genitals are caused Erythema Multiforme

What are the symptoms of Erythema Multiforme?

  • Damage to the blood vessels of the skin with subsequent damage to skin tissues
  • The lesions are extensive, involving multiple body areas
  • Central lesion surrounded by concentric rings of paleness and redness
  • That may appear as nodule, papule, macule
  • Itching of the skin may be present
  • Patient having eye burning, itching and discharge

Erythema Multiforme Treatment

  • Moist compresses applied to skin lesions to reduce the skin tissue damage.
  • Medications such as acetaminophen is used to reduce fever.
  • Antibiotics to control secondary skin infections.
  • Drug reduces duration of symptomatic lesions.
  • A mild cortisone applied directly to the irritated skin areas, colloidal baths and wet compresses may be useful to clean the lesions.
  • Eroded skin should be cleaned regularly and covered with topical anti microbial ointment.
  • Medications used to treat herpes such as acyclovir or valacyclovir.
  • Aciclovir is used in the treatment of Primary herpes simplex.
