What is Erythema Nodosum?
Erythema nodosum is a form of panniculitis. Erythema Nodosum is related to Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. A skin causes small reddened nodules under the skin. Erythema nodosum occurs 3-6 weeks after an event. Erythema Nodosum is appear on the thighs, arms, trunk, face, and neck. The nodules are 1-5 cm in diameter. Women are more affected than men. The male-to-female ratio is 1:4. This disease mainly occur in young adults having age in between 18 to 34 years. The lesions are flat, firm, hot, red, painful lumps. This condition usually subsides in 3-6 weeks without scarring or atrophy.
Causes of Erythema Nodosum
- Sarcoidosis, streptococcal infection causes erythema nodosum.
- Erythema Nodosumis caused by hypersensitivity reaction in subcutaneous fat.
- It is caused fungus infection,inflammatory bowel disease.
- Erythema Nodosumis caused by autoimmune disorder.
- Sulfonamides and halide agents are cause Erythema Nodosum.
- Sensitivity to certain medications such as Oral contraceptives, Sulfones
What are the symptoms of Erythema Nodosum?
- Patient suffers from fever, malaise, joint pain and inflammation.
- Patient have brownish flat patch on the skin.
- Patient may feel warm to touch.
- Swelling of leg.
- The lumps turn from bright cherry red to purple over a few days
- Nodules are appear on the anterior surface of the lower leg.
Erythema Nodosum Treatment
- Microscopic treatment will reveal a septal panniculitis with acute and chronic inflammation in the fat and around blood vessels.
- Erythema Nodosum treated with bedrest, leg elevation, compressive bandages, wet dressings, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAID's).
- Potassium iodide can be used for persistent lesions.
- The use of alternating hot and cold compresses to reduce pain.
- Colchicine drug reduces the formation of uric acid crystals in affected joint.
- Corticosteroids or salicylate medications are useful to reduce acute inflammation.
- Potassium iodide therapy is more effective in providing symptomatic relief.
